A Dreamy Stay at Harpswell Inn in Harpswell, Maine

Some places make you smile the second you see them. That's exactly how I felt when I rounded the corner and caught my first glimpse of the Harpswell Inn.

I actually gasped.

There it was....a beautiful historic white house overlooking the water, looking like something straight out of a New England daydream. If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for old white homes full of history and character, so I already knew I was going to love it before I even stepped inside.

The Harpswell Inn is lovingly owned by Kelsey, John, and their son Archer. They became the proud stewards of the inn in July 2023 and have been thoughtfully adding their own touches while carefully preserving the home's incredible history. Kelsey, who grew up on Westport Island in Midcoast Maine, and her husband returned home to Maine with a vision of creating a welcoming place that feels both timeless and personal, and they have absolutely accomplished that.

The inn itself dates all the way back to 1761. Originally known as the Summer House, it served as the Curtis family's summer home before later becoming the Lookout Point House, which operated as the cookhouse for the nearby Lookout Point Shipyard. During the Civil War era, the shipyard was booming, building schooners and brigs ranging from 20 to 200 tons. At times, as many as four vessels were under construction at once.

One of my favorite historic details is the bell sitting atop the inn. Back in the 1860s, that very bell called the shipbuilders in for their meals which is a beautiful reminder of Harpswell's rich maritime history.

Before I even walked through the front door, I noticed the long porch lined with rocking chairs. I couldn't wait to sit there with a cup of coffee the next morning. Then I spotted the horseshoe crab door knocker on the gorgeous green front door—my favorite color! It was such a perfect little detail that immediately hinted at the personality waiting inside.

The moment I stepped through the door, I felt at home. Comfortable. Cozy. Inviting.

Kelsey and John have created such a beautiful space filled with carefully curated antiques, artwork, and unique pieces that somehow feel both traditional and delightfully eclectic. Every room has character, and you can tell every detail was chosen with intention.

After checking in, we headed to the nearby Dolphin Marina & Restaurant for dinner. It was only a short drive away and absolutely worth it. Great food and incredible waterfront views. Driving around Harpswell that evening made me completely fall in love with the area. It's peaceful, scenic, and feels like one of those hidden corners of Maine that still holds onto its authentic charm.

Back at the inn, there was no shortage of ways to unwind. Shelves of books, games to play, cozy sitting areas that encourage you to slow down.

Before calling it a night, we walked down to the water just in time to catch the last lobster boats returning to the harbor as the sun was setting. It was one of those quiet Maine moments that stays with you long after you leave.

Our room was beautifully decorated, charming, and incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was cozy, but every inch of the room felt thoughtfully designed. And can we talk about the bed? I actually wrote down the brand of the linens because they were some of the softest, most comfortable sheets I've ever slept on. It's those little details that make all the difference, and it's obvious Kelsey and John care deeply about their guests' experience.

The next morning, we wandered downstairs for breakfast and finally met Kelsey. She was just as warm and welcoming as I had imagined.

Breakfast was the perfect start to the day. Yummy yogurt with fruit and granola, delicious pastries and breads, and really great coffee. I carried my mug outside to those rocking chairs that had been calling my name since we arrived.

Birds were singing, flowers in full bloom, a gentle ocean breeze drifted through the porch.

Honestly... I could have sat there for hours.

During breakfast, there was a wedding party staying at the inn, and I couldn't stop thinking about what an incredible place this would be to get married. The historic house, the waterfront setting, the porch, it all felt so romantic. I even joked that maybe I should renew my vows someday just for an excuse to celebrate here.

Before heading home, I took one last walk down to the waterfront, where a seasonal food truck Morses was getting ready to open for summer. I guess that just means I'll have to come back.

The Harpswell Inn also offers four complimentary kayaks, a stand-up paddleboard, and a charming honor-system bar for guests to enjoy, making it even easier to settle in and truly relax.

As I packed up the car, I realized I simply wasn't ready to leave. Some places are beautiful. Some places are comfortable. And every once in a while, you find a place that's both and somehow makes you feel like you've been coming there for years.

The Harpswell Inn is one of those places. If you're looking for a peaceful coastal getaway filled with history, thoughtful hospitality, and authentic Maine charm, I can't recommend it enough. It's the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and remember why Maine has a way of capturing your heart.
