If you’re looking for a stay in Maine that feels truly special, The Craic House in Freeport should be at the top of your list. I had the chance to stay there this week, and I can honestly say it was one of the most thoughtfully designed places I’ve ever experienced. The house was designed by local artist Stephen Young, and his artistic vision is evident in every single detail. From the moment you walk in, you can tell this isn’t just a rental property, it’s an experience. Every corner of the house reflects a love for Maine’s coastal beauty. The décor is carefully curated with coastal touches that feel authentic and artistic rather than overdone. It’s cozy, creative, and incredibly welcoming. Even the kitchen table is a repurposed galley hatch from an old ship that Stephen made himself!

But what really impressed me was the attention to detail. Stephen truly thought of everything! The house had all the comforts you could possibly need, from a fully stocked coffee station to snacks, plates, and toiletries. Even the heated toilet seats and towel rack made the stay feel extra luxurious (especially during a Maine winter!).

And the bed? Easily one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in.

The location couldn’t be better either. The house is surrounded by beautiful nature and close to some great hiking trails, including nearby Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park. It’s the perfect spot if you want to get outside and experience Maine’s coastal landscapes.

At the same time, you’re just a five-minute drive from downtown Freeport, home to the famous L.L.Bean Flagship Store and plenty of great shops.

While we were in town, we had yummy calamari and wine at Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro and grabbed a delicious breakfast sandwich the next morning at The Bake Shop. Get the Harvest breakfast sandwich. It has crispy eggplant on it. So good! We also had so much fun doing a scent blending experience at Sea Love, which turned out to be the perfect girly activity while visiting Freeport.

One of the coolest parts of the stay is that The Craic House sits right next door to Stephen Young’s gallery, ACK ME Arts! Stephen was kind enough to give us a little tour of the gallery, which made the stay feel even more special. Seeing his artwork and hearing about the creative process behind it adds another layer to the experience of staying in a home he designed himself. And trust me—this place has personality.

The Craic House perfectly blends art, comfort, and Maine charm into a stay you won’t forget.

From the thoughtful design to the incredible location, everything about this stay was memorable. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, relax, and appreciate the little details. Between exploring Freeport, enjoying great food, hiking nearby trails, and experiencing Stephen Young’s artwork, the trip felt like the perfect Maine getaway.

And honestly? I already want to go back.

Stay tuned—I'll be sharing another post soon about my visit to Stephen Young’s gallery next door.
